What it is
Recycled polyester fiberfill is made by collecting polyester material, such as used plastic bottles or fiber waste, cleaning it, melting or processing it, and spinning it into new fiber. The finished fill looks and behaves much like virgin polyester fill, although the exact feel depends on the fiber and the process.
Sellers often choose it because customers ask about recycled materials. The fill itself is not new technology, but the claims around it are a common source of disputes.
Why verification matters
A statement such as made from recycled bottles or contains a stated percentage of recycled content is a factual claim, and in several jurisdictions environmental claims are reviewed by regulators and by marketplaces. Do not repeat a supplier's claim unless you hold a document that supports the specific wording.
Ask for the supplier's evidence: a transaction certificate from the fiber supplier, a third-party standard certificate that names the product and the lot, or a test report. If the supplier can only offer a verbal assurance, leave the claim out of the listing and use a plain description of the fill instead.
Specification fields
| Field | What to ask |
|---|---|
| Recycled content | The percentage, whether it applies to the fill only or the whole bed, and how it is measured. |
| Source material | What the recycled material is, such as post-consumer bottles or production waste. |
| Supporting document | The name of the document, the issuer, the date, and the lot it covers. Do not state a certificate number you have not seen. |
| Performance | Fill weight, recovery, and odor, compared with virgin fill on a side-by-side sample. |
| Care method | Whether washing instructions differ from virgin fill. |
Sample checks
Compare the recycled fill sample against a virgin fill sample of the same weight. Press both flat and watch recovery. Smell both on opening. A well-made recycled fill should perform close to virgin fill, but differences in fiber quality exist, and some products feel less lofty or have more odor.
Wash a sample and check for clumping. If the supplier uses a different binder or finish on the recycled fiber, the result can differ.
Wording for the listing
Use specific language that matches your documents, for example, the fill contains a stated percentage of recycled polyester fiber, per the supplier's document. Avoid general words such as eco-friendly, sustainable, or green, which have no fixed meaning and are often challenged. Add the care instructions and the fill weight, and let the customer judge.
