What it is
Shredded foam is made by cutting polyurethane or memory foam into small, irregular pieces. The pieces pack together and shift when the dog lies down, so the bed molds around the animal. The same property means the fill can bunch in one area if the bed is not stitched into compartments.
Strengths
- The bed shapes around the dog and holds the shape for a time.
- The amount of fill can be adjusted by opening a closed pocket, which suits refills.
- It can be vacuum compressed for shipping more easily than a solid slab.
- It can be mixed with fiber for a softer feel.
Limits to explain
Over time, pieces can pack down and the bed loses loft. A refill pack is the easy remedy. If you plan to sell refill packs, make sure the fill type matches the original and that the cover opening is designed for it.
Shredded foam is dusty when new. The inner liner must be sound, because a damaged liner leaves loose pieces to spill. Ask for a double-liner design where the product is meant for households with young children.
Specification fields
| Field | What to ask |
|---|---|
| Piece size | Provide a size range. Large pieces feel lumpy, and very small ones pack down quickly. |
| Fill weight | State per size, with a tolerance. |
| Foam type | Polyurethane, memory foam, or a mix. |
| Liner | Fabric and stitch type, and whether it is closed with a zipper or sewn shut. |
| Compartments | Baffled sections limit migration of the fill. |
| Refill | Ask whether refill packs are offered, and in what weight. |
Sample checks
Lie the sample on its side and push the fill across. See how easily it shifts and whether it returns. Open the outer cover and look at the liner stitching for loose threads. Check the zipper for a lock or tab that a dog cannot open.
