Plush and faux fur for dog beds

Plush and faux fur are pile fabrics used on donut and bolster beds for a soft, textured surface. Their quality depends on the pile, the backing, and the finish.

What pile fabrics are

A pile fabric has a base layer, called the backing, and raised fibers on one face. Plush has a short, dense pile. Faux fur has a longer pile, sometimes in two lengths, to imitate animal fur. Both are normally made from polyester or modacrylic fibers.

The look of a sample in a showroom says little about how it behaves after weeks of use. Pile length, fiber thickness, and how the pile is anchored to the backing decide whether the fabric stays soft or turns patchy.

Typical issues and what causes them

  • Shedding of loose fibers: usually from poor pile anchoring or cutting that leaves loose ends.
  • Matting: more likely with long pile, fine fibers, and wet or heavy use.
  • Static: common on synthetic pile in dry rooms, and it attracts dog hair and dust.
  • Color transfer: dark dyes can mark light fabrics and walls when new.

None of these is a reason to avoid pile fabric. They are reasons to ask for specifics and to set expectations in the listing.

Specification fields

Field to confirmWhy it matters
Fiber contentRequired for the fiber content label. Ask for each fiber and its percentage.
Pile lengthA measured value in millimeters. Longer pile needs more care to prevent matting.
Weight (g/m2)Comparable across quotes and checkable on a sample.
BackingKnit or woven backing affects stretch and how the pile is held.
Shedding checkAsk for a simple shake and brush test on the swatch, performed by the supplier or by you.
Care methodMachine washable or spot clean only. Some pile fabrics should not be tumble dried hot.

How to run a quick sample test

Rub the pile hard with a dry cloth and look at what comes away. Brush it against the lie of the pile and see whether it recovers. Wash a swatch at the stated temperature and compare it with an unwashed one under the same light.

Check where the pile meets the seam. Long pile caught in a seam can look uneven and can pull out if the seam allowance is narrow.

What to put in the listing

State the pile length and the fiber content, say whether the cover is removable, and give the care method. Avoid wording that promises the fabric will not shed or will not mat. Say instead how to brush and wash it, because that is within your control and your customer can act on it.
