What the fabrics are
Fleece is a knit polyester fabric with a brushed surface on one or both sides. Sherpa is a two-layer construction, with a textured, woolly-looking pile on one side and a flat knit on the other. Both are common for blanket layers and for removable toppers.
Strengths and limits
- Soft and light, which suits toppers and liners.
- Quick to dry compared with thicker fabrics.
- Often priced lower than other pile fabrics, which suits value lines.
- Prone to pilling when rubbed, and to static in dry rooms.
Pilling is a surface issue rather than a failure. It is more visible in dark colors. Ask the supplier for a pilling grade from a recognized test method where the product is aimed at heavy use.

Use in cat and dog beds
Fleece toppers are popular in shared pet households because they are easy to remove and wash. A topper is also an easy add-on sale. If you sell it with a bed, state the topper size against the bed size, and show it in a flat photo so the customer can check the fit.
